According to both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, New Line Cinema has tapped William Goldman to write the film version of Shazam!. Goldman is a two-time Oscar winner, and has written such films as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Princess Bride, All the President’s Men and the just released Dreamcatcher. This is his first comic book adaptation.
"I started collecting comics in 1938," Goldman told Variety. "I was a lunatic comic book lover, and I had everything. (This project) is a big deal for me. I hope I don't screw it up."
Having acquired the right to the property in December, New Line currently plans for the Shazam! film to be a holiday 2004 or summer 2005 release.
